Background: Gerard was born in 2265, to parents Andrew and Mandi Lloyd, who he later named his daughter after. He’d always wanted to be a doctor, and planned to attend medical school, but shortly after his high-school graduation his parents were killed in a car accident, leaving him to care for his twelve-year-old sister, Sara. He stayed home from college for four years, working at a pharmacy to provide for himself and his sister while saving up for college. Shortly after he’d enrolled in college, his sister married Miles Crash, leaving Gerard alone.
In college, he met Harrison Trent, and though the two were far apart in age, they became friends. After graduating, he worked his way through medical school and his residency, then set up his own practice. One evening after he’d quietly worked for three years, he found a baby girl with measles in a cardboard box on his doorstep, with no identification. He took care of her, named her Andi Lloyd, and raised her. When Andi was six, Gerard’s sister Sara died, leaving her nineteen-year-old son Eagle alone. Gerard took him in and supported him until he left to attend pilot academy.
When Andi was ten, Harrison Trent, recently promoted captain of the Surveyor, asked Gerard to be ship’s doctor, and Gerard accepted, taking Andi with him. The two of them have lived and worked primarily on the starship ever since.
